OCEAN & CRAFTS
Come down to The Old Shipyard and experience the island’s maritime spirit with your own hands. Both children and adults are welcome in the beautiful shipbuilding hall, where you will learn to work with wood and steel from traditionally skilled instructors in the historic workshops at Ærøskøbing Harbor. The craftsmen are ready to guide you in carving a spoon from freshly felled poplar, forging a hairpin over an open flame, building an insect hotel from recycled materials, and much more, all while providing you with knowledge and practical experiences that offer a unique insight into how traditional craftsmanship and sustainability can go hand in hand.❣
THE EXPERIENCES AND WORKSHOPS
Wear clothes that may get dirty and remember closed-toed shoes—it’s time to get to work! The workshops are designed for all ages. The youngest can sit in the creative space and make fun-fish from a variety of recycled materials that we have collected throughout the year.
Wood Workshop
Here you’ll have the opportunity to work with simple woodworking and hand tools. Felix will teach you basic wood techniques, tool handling, and the mindset behind the craft. He can show you how to carve a spoon, construct a butter knife, create a small boat, or work on something special of your own design.
Blacksmith Shop
Aia-Li will demonstrate traditional blacksmithing techniques over an open flame in the blacksmith shop. Here you can try your hand at working with iron and steel and learn basic blacksmithing techniques. You will have the chance to create small, simple maritime products that you can take home as a lovely souvenir from Ærø.
Creative Workshop
On our first floor, we will set sail in the Archipelago. In the creative workshop, the little ones can explore recycled materials and craft beautiful fish that can be hung in nets or taken home.
THE CRAFTS(WO)MEN
Aia-Li Sidenius, Blacksmith, and Felix Dreesen, Carpenter.
Aia-Li Sidenius has learned to make her own charcoal and extract iron from bog ore, while Felix Dreesen has mastered the art of finding, selecting, and processing wood directly from the forest. Their awareness of the origin and processes of resources is a central part of their practice, and they will carry this philosophy into the workshops at The Old Shipyard.
Both convey the craft and the respect for nature’s resources that it requires. Their knowledge and practical experiences provide you with a unique insight into how traditional craftsmanship and sustainability can go hand in hand.
HOW?
When you arrive at The Old Shipyard at Ærøskøbing Harbor, you can park your car nearby. Afterward, you can purchase your ticket at the shop in the large blue building. Then you will proceed to the wooden-clad shipyard, where Aia-Li and Felix will be waiting in the workshops. Go inside and say hello, and they will welcome you and help you get settled in—we look forward to seeing you!
